Why People Come

Focus, Attention, and Hyperactivity

For People Exploring Additional Ways to Support Attention, Mental Organization, Focus, and Nervous System Regulation.

People come to us about attention using very ordinary language. Reading the same paragraph three times. Opening a laptop to do one thing and surfacing forty minutes later having done six others. Knowing exactly what needs doing and being unable to start it. Following the first half of a sentence and losing the rest.

Some of the people who describe this have been given a formal label of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, Many have not, and are not looking for one. We work the same way either way, because we do not identify or label anything, and the session does not change based on what someone has been told.

Momentous offers passive microcurrent neurofeedback in Arvada and Broomfield, with sessions intended to support relaxation and stress reduction. This page explains how that relates to attention, in careful terms.

Attention sits downstream of regulation.

A Closer Look

Attention, Regulation, and Where a Session Fits

What Do People Describe When They Talk About Focus?

Almost never a flat inability to concentrate. Usually something more specific and more frustrating: attention that is available but not steerable. It arrives in abundance for the thing that is interesting and refuses to show up for the thing that is due.

The second common description is cost. People can focus, and doing so takes so much effort that by four in the afternoon there is nothing left for anything else, including the people they live with.

  • Starting a task feels disproportionately hard
  • Attention arrives easily for interesting work and not for necessary work
  • Losing the thread mid-conversation or mid-paragraph
  • Working in bursts, then crashing
  • Holding several unfinished things at once
  • Feeling mentally busy and unproductive at the same time

How Is Attention Connected to the Brain and Nervous System?

We do not chase symptoms. We work with the brain and nervous system, the control center behind them.

Attention is not a single dial. It depends on how well the nervous system regulates arousal, which is roughly how switched on the system is at a given moment. Too low and nothing engages. Too high and everything competes for the foreground at once. Steady attention tends to sit in a narrower band between those two.

This is also why attention and stress travel together. When the system is spending most of the day in the mode that prepares you to act, it is scanning and reacting, which is the opposite of settling on one paragraph for ten minutes. People who arrive asking about focus very often mention sleep and irritability in the same breath.

We work with that shared system rather than trying to address attention as a standalone item.

Where Does Microcurrent Neurofeedback Fit for Focus and Attention?

As a passive, complementary part of a wider plan. Sensors sit at points around the cranium, the system reads brainwave activity, and it returns a very brief, very low microcurrent signal while you sit still and do nothing.

This is worth being precise about, because it is where most confusion lives. Traditional EEG neurofeedback for attention is an active training model: many sessions, feedback through a game or sound, and skill built over time. What we offer is not that. It is passive and it does not train a skill.

It also does not replace anything. If you work with a clinician, a coach, a counselor, or a prescriber, that continues unchanged. We do not advise anyone about medication, and we will end that conversation politely and point you back to your prescriber.

  • Passive rather than a training program you practice
  • Complementary to clinical care, coaching, and school or workplace support
  • Not a substitute for professional assessment by a qualified clinician
  • Not a place to get advice about medication

What Do People Notice After a Session?

It varies and we do not predict it. What people report about attention tends to be modest and specific rather than dramatic: starting a task with less internal negotiation, or getting through an afternoon without the usual mid-afternoon collapse.

Others describe the quiet more than the focus, a sense of the background noise dropping for an hour or two. Some notice nothing. We write down what you tell us and we do not encourage anyone to read significance into a session that did not feel like anything.

Is This Something for Children?

Our studio works with adults. If you are asking on behalf of a young person, the right starting point is a qualified clinician who can assess the whole picture, not a wellness studio.

Will You Tell Me Whether I Have an Attention Condition?

No. We are not qualified to make that assessment and we do not attempt it. Nothing we measure is a substitute for a clinical evaluation.

What Does the Research Actually Say?

Attention is one of the areas where being careful matters most, because the internet is full of confident claims that the literature does not support.

There are two different bodies of work here and they are easy to confuse. The larger one covers traditional EEG neurofeedback, where a person trains over many sessions with visual or audio feedback. That literature spans decades and is uneven in quality. The smaller one covers microcurrent systems like the one we use, and it is early, mostly small, and often uncontrolled.

IASIS Technologies, which makes the system in our studio, maintains a practitioner-facing list of published papers and case reports involving its device. We read it, we take it seriously as a starting point, and we also note that much of it consists of small samples without control groups. We cite it as a source of interest rather than as evidence of an outcome, and we do not send people to a manufacturer page to make up their minds.

Where a study exists that is worth your time, we say what it measured and how small it was on our own research pages rather than counting citations at you.

What We Will Not Tell You

We will not say this addresses attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. We will not compare it with anything a clinician has prescribed. We will not name a number of sessions, quote a percentage, or show you a score from before and after.

If attention difficulties are affecting your work, study, or relationships, an assessment by a qualified clinician gives you far more to work with than we can. We are glad to be one quiet part of the picture, and we are not the picture.
