Heart Rate Variability Insights
One More Quiet Reading, Taken While You Sit Still.
Heart rate variability, usually shortened to HRV, is the small variation in time between one heartbeat and the next. A resting heart does not tick like a clock, and the pattern of that variation is one general window into the balance between your alert and settled states.
At Momentous, an HRV reading is a short, still measurement taken with a sensor. We use it as context for the relaxation side of a session, alongside what you notice yourself.
A reading describes a moment. Your own experience over time matters more.
What Is Heart Rate Variability in Plain Language?
Your heartbeats are not evenly spaced. The gaps stretch and shorten slightly from beat to beat, and HRV is a way of describing how much they vary.
That variation reflects the ordinary back and forth between the branch of the nervous system that gears you up and the branch that settles you down. The nervous system basics page covers those two states without the jargon.
How Is a Reading Taken Here?
You sit comfortably and breathe normally while a sensor records for a few minutes. There is nothing to do and nothing to control during the reading.
We take readings under conditions that are as similar as we can make them, because HRV moves easily. Comparing a rushed morning reading with a calm afternoon one tells you about the morning, not about you.
- Short, still, and always optional.
- Taken at a consistent point in the visit where possible.
- Recorded so you can see the pattern rather than a single figure.
How Much Should a Single Number Mean to You?
Not much on its own. HRV shifts with sleep, hydration, caffeine, illness, alcohol, exercise, stress, breathing rate, posture, and time of day. A single figure is a snapshot of a particular few minutes.
Patterns across many readings are more informative than any one of them, and even then HRV differs so widely between people that comparing your number with someone else's is not useful.
Does a Session Change My HRV?
We do not claim that. We record readings because they are interesting context for relaxation, not as evidence of an outcome.
Is an HRV Reading Medical Care?
No. It is a general wellness measurement. If you have questions about your heart or your health, that belongs with a licensed clinician.
