Microcurrent Versus Traditional Neurofeedback
Traditional neurofeedback trains you. You watch or hear feedback tied to your own brain activity and your attention shapes it over many sessions. Microcurrent neurofeedback does not ask you to train. You sit still while a very small signal is introduced through sensors, and the session is short.
The two share a name and very little else about the experience.
What Is the Practical Difference in the Room?
In traditional neurofeedback you are working. You face a screen or listen to audio and your engagement is the mechanism. Sessions often run thirty to forty five minutes and a course commonly runs into the tens of visits.
In a microcurrent session you are not working. Sensors are placed, you sit, and the active portion is measured in minutes rather than in a screen exercise.
| What differs | Traditional EEG neurofeedback | Microcurrent neurofeedback |
|---|---|---|
| Your role | Active. Your attention drives the feedback | Passive. You sit still |
| Feedback you perceive | Screen or audio you respond to | Usually nothing you notice |
| Typical active time | Thirty to forty five minutes | A few minutes per placement |
| Usual course length | Often many tens of visits | No established number |
| Evidence base | Decades of literature, quality varies | Small and early |
| What the device is for | Varies by system and clearance | Relaxation training and muscle reeducation |
Is One of Them Better Than the Other?
No, and any provider who answers that quickly is selling. They ask different things of you and they have different evidence behind them.
Traditional neurofeedback has the deeper literature. Microcurrent asks far less of your time and attention. Those are different advantages and neither cancels the other.
Which One Suits Someone Who Cannot Sit Through Screen Exercises?
Passive formats ask less of attention, which is the practical reason some people look at microcurrent first.
That is a statement about effort, not about outcome. We cannot tell you a passive session will suit you better.
Can You Do Both?
People do, usually at different times rather than in the same week. If you are already working with a traditional provider, tell us, and tell them.
We will not ask you to stop something that is working for you.
